The Weather Network can kiss my ass!

Tuesday, February 25, 2003

Seen enough snow, have you? Personally, I've seen enough bloody snow to last me 'til Winter 2005. What a helluva winter it's been in Southern Ontario so far - and there's still almost a month left to go. I swear to god it has snowed practically every single day this year. Every morning I have to scrape snow and ice off my car and just about every afternoon I look out the window and see that I'll be driving home on slippery roads yet again that evening. And it has been really, really cold too. Today's high is -10C - with an expected low of -25C, not including windchill.

I remember checking out Canada's Weather Network's predictions for the winter of 2003 this past December. What did they predict? Why, a much warmer and drier winter season this year. LIARS! OK, now that I've got that off my chest, time to bundle up to face the great outdoors once again - I tell you, summer can't come soon enough. That is all...

Striving to put right what once went wrong

I've been looking for an excuse to post a pic of Scott Bakula and finally, here it is!As a temp, I'd often gone into jobs and convinced permanent employees to resign their positions because they were either working in shitholes or working for lunatics. My friend Ron likened me to Sam in Quantum Leap, but encouraging people to make their careers better. Well this week I finally made the leap home.

One of my best friends called me at work and told me the company she works for in Toronto was looking for a Marketing/Communications Assistant. I sent her my resume and an hour or two later she called me back and asked me what time I could come in for an interview. I was excited and freaked out, as you can imagine!

So I drove there the next day in a snowstorm (I was 15 min late, ugh) but they were cool with it. I guess she had pumped me up about them because they seemed to be impressed with my qualifications. The interviews with the Marketing Director and HR Director went well and the very same day I was offered the job! I start Monday on a three month contract at almost double the salary I was making at the shitty temp job I was at and if all goes well I'll get offered the position permanently.

So the next day, I called the temp agency and I guess the boss was pissed that I took a day off for the interview because the woman at the agency (who is a twit and always ends conversations with m'bye) said my assignment there would end Friday. I said: "No, it ends today." She was like, "Well could you possibly do tomorrow?" I said "No, I can't. Let him know today is my last day." What a feeling of power that was!

That same day, about 3 o'clock, the boss comes over and asks me if I'd be willing to come in and train the new receptionist tomorrow. I said "no sorry, I need the day to start packing" and he asks: "Would you come in on your own time and help?" I started rolling my eyes and then laughing in his face and replied with: "Uh, NO!" He was pissed off and said "Well I guess that point is moot then" and left the office.

The girl I worked with there said she was so embarrassed she works for such a lunatic but she was grateful she'd met me and "seen the light," so to speak. She had told me earlier she was resigning the next day...so I had saved yet another career. Sam would have been proud.
